Publishing as Method Exhibition
‘Publishing as Method: A Sample of Ways to Work Together in Asia’ is an exhibition by BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY, curated and designed by Napisa Leelasuphapong during her time working there, in collaboration with Mediabus, an independent publisher from South Korea. The exhibition aims to resituate and reinterpret the previous exhibition, ‘<Publishing as Method>’, which was held in Seoul in 2020, in the context of BANGKOK ART BOOK FAIR 2023.
The Bangkok version further discusses how publishing is used as a method in the context of Asia. The methods, recognized as significant themes in the region, are underscored through historical observations of publishing and by presenting a sample of publications, especially those produced by independent publishers. The exhibition proposes five methods that can be seen through publishing circulated in Asia, including: ‘Publishing as Auto-observation,’ ‘Publishing as Decentralization,’ ‘Publishing as Political Mobilization,’ ‘Publishing as Knowledge Production and Distribution,’ and ‘Publishing as a Challenge to the Practice Itself.’
Along with the exhibition, a publication of the same title was published. It acts as an addition to the exhibition and as a catalog of the books shown, representing these methods.
