Designing Belief
‘Designing Belief: A Journey into the Sacred Art of Phrakhreūang’ is a piece resulting from the workshop “HISTORICALL: Design Stories of Resistance” conducted by Onomatopee and Futuress. This article interprets everyday resistance to precarity by observing the popularity of sacred objects like Buddhist amulets, known as Phrakhreūang in Thai. The concept of Phrakhreūang is explored through the lens of material culture studies and its historical context to uncover the meanings forged through the evolution of society, ranging from providing physical protection during WWII to resistance against poverty in the era of neoliberalism.
